    From the Principal...

Dear Parents,

Spring is here!

Our APS PTO, Book Fair, and 1st grade performance was better than ever!  Thank you Ms. Johnson for facilitating our Book Fair and thank you for all that you do to support APS.  Thank you to the author Kay Kay Roper for attending this event and signing copies of her book, I Want to Have a Perfect Day. It was a great experience for APS students and their families. Last, thanks to Mrs. Morrison and our 1st grade team for assisting our students with an awesome play performance, "The Principal and the Pea."  Job well done!

On Tuesday, March 21, we participated in the statewide Tornado drill at APS. Hopefully, we never have to use this drill in a real situation but we feel it is important that everyone is well prepared in the event that a tornado passes through our area.

On March 23, our APS Superintendent, School Board Members and a news reporter toured our school. They moved from classroom to classroom visiting, observing, and communicating with students who were engaged in many learning tasks.  We are proud of our academic classrooms and appreciate how involved our School Board members are in our children's education.

Fans, thank you to the Lynchburg Hillcats for visiting APS to promote the "Hit the Books" program.  We all agree that teaming up with our community to promote reading supports our reading goals.

If you did not make it to our Getting Ready for Kindergarten workshop held on March 28, 2017, you missed a fabulous treat.  Beginning kindergarten is a huge milestone for parents and their children. In order to help prepare your child for this huge transition, we encourage you to attend one of the Getting Ready for Kindergarten workshops.  Our Title 1 reading specialists and assistants provided resources, ideas, strategies, and routines that will help your child be successful.   The next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, 2017.  See you there!

Bright Beginnings Recruitment has begun. We are asking all parents to be sure to submit your child's application to APS's office as soon as possible. This is a free preschool opportunity for qualifying families who have children that have reached the age of 4.  The child must be four by September 30, 2017.  Students will attend Monday through Friday from 8:25 am – 3:00 pm.  Bright Beginning classes will begin in August.  This early experience will assist in building your child's language, literacy, social and academic skills.

APS is continuously in need of volunteers for various activities and events. We are currently soliciting volunteers to assist with our APS Field Day.  The students will be participating in many fun filled games on that day.  In order to have a successful Field Day, parents are asked to assist the Physical Education Staff by helping with our game stations.

The students are super excited about April 10 – 14 which is Spring Break.  We want to wish everyone a fun, safe, and restful time.  Classes will resume on Monday, April 17, 2017.

Best Regards,

Michele West, Principal
