Happy National FFA Week!  We hope you wore your camouflage to celebrate with us today!  Did you know that FFA got its start in Virginia?  That's right!  In 1926, four professors at Virginia Tech created the Future Farmers of Virginia, which became the model for the National FFA Organization.  AMS FFA would like to invite all students and staff to participate in FFA Week.  Tomorrow will be FFA T-shirt day.  Thursday is Boots and Blue Jeans Day, and Friday is Blue and Gold Day.

There will be crops judging at ACHS today until 5:00.

There will be NO Band practice after school today.   

FFA is taking fresh strawberry orders through February 22.  Any FFA member or Ag students is invited to sell for a chance at prizes.  Please see Mrs. Hodges for more information or for order forms. 

Teen Time in the Light will be meeting this Friday, February 22nd.

2019 ACHS Football Sideline Cheerleading Tryouts will be on Saturday, March 2nd beginning at 9 a.m. in the ACHS Gym.  This is open to current 7th and 8th graders.  You must have a valid VHSL Physical to try out.  Packets are available in the Main Office.

Due to some scheduling issues, the start of our afterschool tutoring program has been postponed.  After school tutoring will now begin Monday, February 25th (note date change).  This only applies to students who returned the permission form to attend after school tutoring.

JV Girls Soccer Tryouts will start February 19th.  The expectation is that you come into the season in shape to play.  Conditioning will be held Mondays and Thursdays 4:15 to 5:30 at the high school.  Be prepared to run outside and lift weights inside.

AMS Boys and Girls Soccer tryouts will begin on Monday, February 25th (note date change).  You have this week to get your VHSL physical, you will not be allowed to tryout without one.  Students trying out will need to remain in homeroom until C bell, and then quickly get changed and meet in the Gym.  Your ride must be here by 5:40 both days.  Make sure you have indoor and outdoor gear, water, and a winning attitude!

Middle School Track will begin Monday, March 4th, 3:45 – 5:30 at the ACHS Track.  Must have current VHSL Physical to participate or try out.  You will need a note from home to ride the Activity bus.  For more information, see Coach Marshall.

NABF Baseball Tryouts will be held at the Town Ballpark Monday, March 4th and Tuesday, March 5th.  Students interested in trying out, please stop by the office to pick up a registration form.  A parent meeting and indoor practice will be held Sunday, February 24th at Sluggers Academy behind J. E. Sears.  Please refer to the registration form for more information.

Students, we will be conducting Chromebook checks within the next few days.  During the check, teachers will make sure that you have your Chromebook, your charger, and your case.  They will also be inspecting these items for damages.  Any student who does not have their Chromebook, charger, or case or has damage to those items will receive a bill for replacements.  Bills will need to be paid before students will be allowed participation in the end of year events. 

Listen Up!!  Do you want to save ALL of this year's memories and funniest moments??  Well you're in luck, because Yearbooks are being sold right now!!  This is your best way to save your memories and they're only $25.  But if you want one you better make it quick because the deadline is March 1st!  Don't let these memories go to waste, BUY A YEARBOOK!!!

Mrs. Coley's Math students need to bring their charged Chromebook to class today.

The Valentine's Dance sponsored by FFA will be today from 3:30-5:00.  The cost is $3.00 and refreshments will be sold. All permissions were due yesterday.  No late slips will be accepted.

Softball tryouts will be Monday, February 18th at ACHS.  Time is 3:30 to 5:30.  If it is raining, tryouts will be held at Sluggers on 460.

So far AMS has collected over $90 in Box tops.  Please continue to help our school earn money by collecting Box tops.  They can be turned in to Mrs. Thomson.

The University of Virginia Curry School of Education has announced its Summer Enrichment Program for gifted and high-ability students.  The camp is a 12-day residential experience.  Students live on Grounds of UVA and attend classes at a nearby private school.  Applications are available on-line beginning December 15th and are due February 15, 2019.  The cost per student is $1,375.00.  Financial aid is available based on need.  For additional information, stop by the Guidance Office and pick up a flyer.

It's time to get your dancing shoes on… FFA will be sponsoring a Valentines dance this Friday from 3:30-5:00.  The cost is $3.00 and refreshments will be sold.  See your teachers or Mrs. Williams in the library for permission slips.  All permissions must be turned in by tomorrow, Thursday, February 14th.

The winners for Ms. Henzi's art contests are in.  Winner of the best cartoon is Alex Woods, Best portrait goes to Hailey Walker and the winner of the ceiling competition was a drawing completed by Sydney Hobgood and Marissa Perry.  Congratulations artists!  See Ms. Henzi today during Discovery for your prize.

Mrs. Swanberg will be holding Mathcounts practice after school until 4:30 Tuesday – Friday.  All students are welcome but you must bring a note from your parents saying you can stay.  See Mrs. Swanberg for more details.  

Softball Conditioning will be held today and tomorrow from 3:45 - 5:30.

So far AMS has collected over $90 in Box tops.  Please continue to help our school earn money by collecting Box tops.  They can be turned in to Mrs. Thomson.

National School Counseling Week is being celebrated this week to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within US school systems.  This week reminds us of the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  The AMS students, faculty, and staff would like to thank Mrs. Cooter and Mrs. Costello for all they do for us each day.  We are very appreciative of the guidance, assistance, and listening ear each of these wonderful ladies gives to us so willingly each and every day.

Today the AMS Basketball team will travel to Nelson to participate in their student games.  Members of Boys and Girls Basketball teams including managers should be dismissed at 12:10, bus will leave at 12:20.  All 6th and 7th graders on the team, should eat on their regular lunch shift.  All 8th members should eat on the second lunch shift with the 6th graders.

Mrs. Torrence's and Mrs. Hodges Teen Time in the Light will meet today from 3:30 – 4:45.  Please report to the Gym on D bell.

Congratulations to the middle school Running Raiders that competed in the Woodberry Forest Indoor Track Meet.

Nadiyah Abdussalaam placed 6th in the 55 meter hurdles and she placed 6th in the 55 meters.

Madison Martin placed 5th and ran a personal record in the 1000 meters.  She also placed 1st and ran a personal record in the 3200 meters.

Wyatt Weaver competed in the long jump and ran the 55 meters.

Congratulations to all of our newly inducted National Junior Honor Society members!  We are very proud of you and the work ethic and grit you've demonstrated to earn this honor.  Many thanks to Mrs. MacGregor and Mrs. Gilliam for planning our ceremony.  Mrs. Gilliam did an outstanding job leading the Induction Ceremony last night.  Thank you!!  Thanks also to Mrs. Totty for running our lights and sound after a quick tutorial from Mr. Garrett!

Today we start our second week of Pennies for Patients.  I hope you all brought in all the coins and dollars you collected over the weekend!  Last week, Mrs. Wilson's homeroom class collected the most money.  They are now in the lead for the pizza party.  I'm excited to announce that several students have received prizes for collecting their online donations as well.

Please keep up the good work to help children with cancer!

Congratulations to the Middle School Running Raiders that competed in the JV Heritage Invitational on Saturday.

Nadiyah Abdussalaam had a personal best in the long jump at 14'2 and also a personal best in the high jump at 4'0 feet.

Rupert Armentrout ran a personal best in the 55 hurdles at 10.68.

Ryan Culpepper threw a personal best using a 12 lb. shot put at 28 feet.

When someone has blood cancer, they have to go through treatment for a long time – sometimes as long as three years or more!

Did you know that some of the treatments for blood cancers are chemotherapy, radiation, and blood marrow transplant?

The money we raise will help cancer patients all over the world!  Keep up the good work of bringing in those coins, dollars, and online donations!

Our school has accepted the challenge of helping to find a cure for blood cancer!  We are joining over 27,000 schools across the nation to make a difference and raise as much money as we can!  Over the next month, our school will be working to reach a goal of $2,019.00.  A letter has been provided to take home to your parents that talks about Pennies for Patients and has instructions for setting up your very own online, giving page.  Be sure to set that up soon and start saving lives!  When you create your own online fundraising page and start raising money, you become eligible to receive awesome Hero Squad Gear!  Please remember … you can donate more than just pennies!  Please help NJHS meet our goal!

The University of Virginia Curry School of Education has announced its Summer Enrichment Program for gifted and high-ability students.  The camp is a 12-day residential experience.  Students live on Grounds of UVA and attend classes at a nearby private school.  Applications are available on-line beginning December 15th and are due February 15, 2019.  The cost per student is $1,375.00.  Financial aid is available based on need.  For additional information, stop by the Guidance Office and pick up a flyer.

Students – please check the lost and found on the 6th grade hall and in the Gym if you have lost or misplaced items.  All items left in lost and found will be donated as of Friday.

Today is the last day to turn in your socks.  If you brought socks please turn them in to your homeroom teacher.

There will be NO AMS Boys and Girls basketball today.  We will resume on Monday, January 7th with normal practices.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from both teams!

The Would you Rather Discovery Class donation drive is underway.  They are asking for donations for the elderly in our community.  Donations need to be small size lotions, shampoos, powder, deodorant, body wash, plastic containers with lids, and chapstick.  They are also asking for small size blankets.  Most of these items can be found at dollar stores or Walmart.  Please help them reach their goal of 60 of each of the items.  And of course, money donations are always accepted to help buy any items that are not donated.  Please turn in items to the box in the Library and money donations directly to Mrs. Warner.  Thanks EVERYONE for helping the needy in our community!

All 8th grade students in Civics and Science will be in SOL Testing today.  8th graders will be swapping lunch shift with 7th graders today.  Bells will be turned off, please follow your paper copy to dismiss students for class change.

All Geometry students will test at 8:30.

Mrs. Sprouse's students should report to the STEM Lab.  Please bring your Chromebooks with you to class.

The Library will be closed until after testing is completed.

Mr. Hofmann's 2nd period should report to the 6th Grade Lab. 

There should be NO printing jobs sent to any of the labs or to the Library during testing.

Last night, our Lady Raiders and Coach Marshall encountered some very unsportsmanlike behavior on the court.  Our team handled themselves with dignity and grace and displayed the true character of a Raider!  I was exceptionally proud of each of you, as was every Raider fan in the Gym last night.  You won that game before the first point was scored.  Way to go Raiders!! – Dr. Servis
