The first female governor of a U.S. state was Wyoming governor Nellie Tayloe Ross, elected in 1924.  Wyoming was also the first state to give women the right to vote, in 1869, making it a surprising leader in women’s rights.

Students are to use their assigned locker only.  All students are given a locker assignment at the beginning of the year.  Students are not to use lockers that do not have a lock on them or another student’s locker.  If you’ve forgotten your locker combination, please see your homeroom teacher.  If items are found in a locker without a lock, your items will be removed and placed in lost and found.

Students are reminded that you are not allowed to wear hats or hoods inside the building.  Once you are in the building, both should be off all day.

Students who arrive to school prior to 8 a.m. must report to the Gym.

Students who are on Walker’s bell and walk, you need to go to the Crossing Guard and be taken across the street.  You should not cross on your own in any other areas.

Students are reminded that you are not allowed to attend AMS Sporting events without being with an adult.

Students are reminded that you are not to take your Chromebooks to Gym with you on days you have Gym.

Students are reminded that you are not allowed to bring blankets to school.

Students are reminded that you should be charging your Chromebooks at home.  If you do not take them home, you are to charge them in your Homeroom at the end of the day.

AMS is collecting box tops again this year.  So far we have collected over $50.  Please continue to help your school earn money by collecting box tops.  They can be turned in to Mrs. Thomson.

Students are reminded that they should be reporting to the Cafeteria immediately upon arriving to AMS if they want to purchase breakfast.  Our Grab and Go Breakfast Program allows students who arrive late to school the ability to eat breakfast in the classroom up until 8:25 a.m.  After 8:25 a.m., ALL food and trash should be disposed and classes should move on as normal.

There is to be no eating of any kind in classrooms after 8:25 a.m.  Students who remove things from their lunches and begin eating them in class are subject to having those items thrown away.  Lunches are ONLY to be consumed in the cafeteria spaces.

Students you are reminded you are only allowed to bring clear water bottles to school.

Happy National FFA Week!  Thank you for wearing your FFA t-shirt to show your FFA spirit!  Did you know that FFA has a connection to Black History Month?  When schools were segregated, black students had a separate organization – the New Farmers of America, or NFA.  In 1965, as schools were integrating, the NFA and FFA merged.  This made one unified organization for agriculture students.  Tomorrow we invite you to wear your favorite boots and blue jeans for FFA Week.

We would like to take a moment to congratulate 7th grader, Lainey Woody, for her selection as Alto one to the ACDA All-Virginia Middle School Honors Treble Choir out of 1,030 audition submissions!  Lainey will travel to Richmond, Virginia for this three day event in April and participate in the final concert performance at First Baptist Church at 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 25th.  This concert is free and open to the public, but, if you plan to attend, arrive early for both parking and seating.

Dance Permission slips have been given to your Homeroom teachers and there are also extras in the Main Office.  Please make sure you ask your Homeroom Teacher for a permission slip, they have enough for each student.  The cost of the dance is $3 (pay at the dance) and proceeds will benefit the Appomattox Relay for Life.  Permission slips are due by next Wednesday, February 26th.  Late permission slips will NOT be accepted.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

Miss Stokes is proud of the girls basketball team who played a very good Dunbar Middle School team and of the boys basketball team who never gave up, even when there were some very inconsistent calls against us, winning 19-15 with less than a minute left to play.  Go Raiders!!

Congratulations to the Appomattox Middle School Indoor Track Team in their meet at Woodberry Forest.

Tre Wheeler placed 1st in the 55 meters.  He ran the 300 meters and pole vaulted.

Nadir Abdussalaam placed 2nd in the 55 meters and he ran the 300 meters.

Keenan Conroy placed 5th in the 500 meters.

Madison Martin placed 3rd in the 3200 meters, she placed 4th in the 1000 meters and ran the 4x400 relay.

Jordan Layne ran the 500 meters and ran the 300 meters.  She also ran in the 4x400 relay.

AMS Basketball will host Rustburg this afternoon with the girls game starting at 5:00, and the boys after.  Please do not dismiss members of the teams until D bell.  Players report to the Gym to get ready for the game.

Tryouts for both boys and girls Middle School Soccer will be held on February 25th and 26th.  You MUST have a valid VHSL physical before tryouts in order to participate.  Interested students can sign up on Coach Lane's door during Homeroom.  DO NOT come during class.
